Smoking in the snow?

Apr 24

I have been a busy gal since I last posted which was ummm..Thursday!  I will give you a brief run down on what I have been up to over the last couple of days…at least the stuff worth talking about.

On Thursday evening for supper I tried the Millet and Black Bean Burgers out of my Clean Food cookbook.  Boy did they turn out delish!

IMG_9399 I had two of the burgers sans the bun!  On my double burger I layered it this way

  • Millet burger
  • tomato paste
  • avocado
  • Millet Burger
  • Greek yogurt
  • Chipotle Pineapple Salsa

Holy YUM!

IMG_9404 I made sweet potato fries for the side.  This meal was flavourful and filling.  The recipe makes a lot of mix so I saved some for another batch for next week.  I see some burgers in my future for lunch.

Friday was a busy day.  In the morning I got up early and got in my weight circuit workout, had breakfast……P1040529

got showered and dressed, got J up and gave him breakfast then it was off to his early leaning class in the morning.

When we got back we picked up the hubs and headed out to the Farmers Market to get a few supplies for the him…he is smoking some meat this weekend.  I will tell you about that later.

After the market we needed some lunch…we were all hungry.  So we went to a little place that we have not been to in quite a while.

P1040543 Myhre’s Deli….this place serves the best Montreal Smoked Meat!

P1040542 This restaurant has been around since 1922.  It used to be called the Palace of Eats until recently when the name was changed.

P1040540 Their menu is still the same…short and sweet.  But everything is always so good!

P1040534 Today I was craving a Bagel with Lox so that is what I ordered. The hubs ordered the smoked meat of course!

P1040532 While we waited for our order J did a little mugging for the camera.  He can be so cheezy!

P1040533But also so darn CUTE!

The hubs ordered the Boss’s Cut which is 10oz of meat!  It also comes with a big crispy kosher pickle, coleslaw and ripple chips.

P1040535  The meat could hardly stay on the bread!

P1040539 My bagel with lox…was so darn good!  I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite.   I love the salty capers!

J had a very yummy grilled cheese sandwich.

P1040537 It had four different kinds of cheese in it! (gouda, cheddar, mozza + reggiano)  It was oooeey..gooey good!

Now to what my hubs would say is the best part of the day….preparing the meat he bought for smoking.  In the spring/summer this is one of his hobbies he likes to smoke meat…he is such a man! HA!

P1040544 A large 9 pound pork shoulder for pulled pork.  This pork is free range and hormone free.

We prepared the spices we bought for the rub.

IMG_9419 It was a mixture of smoked Spanish paprika, Hungarian sweet paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, chilli powder, white pepper, fresh ground black pepper, dry mustard, celery seed and salt.

IMG_9421 It smelt really good!

The paprika smelled especially good!

IMG_9417 We got it at the Farmers Market from The Silk Road.  They grind their spices fresh and they smell amazing!  I also buy my cinnamon from them.

We then rubbed the mixture liberally on the meat.

P1040553 All ready to sit in the fridge overnight and let the spices meld into the meat.

That brings us to tonight.  The hubs has got the meat smoking for the next 16 hours as I write this post.  But we have one small problem….it is snowing!

No problem the hubs got a house for his smoker to keep it from getting wet!  He bought a tent and placed the smoker on top of our fire pit to use as a stand.

P1040558 This was taken before it starting snowing…

This is what it looks like now….

P1040563 Oh boy…we are hoping that the snow will stop soon.  So for supper tomorrow night we should hopefully have beautifully tender and very flavourful smoked pulled pork!  Here is crossing our fingers that it works ok.  We did not count on it snowing this weekend!

Tomorrow I have a run planned…but it might be on my treadmill..bah!  I also have some almond macaroon making planned as well.  I make the recipe from the Raw Food Real World cookbook…it is to die for!

Well I am off to watch some PVR’d shows with the hubs!

Night!

Wasn’t that snow horribly timed? I was taking Darren to the Zoo for his b-day yesterday, but had to revamp due to the rain/snow! Gotta ove Calgary! Love reading your posts and seeing all the healthy food you make!
